Directions to Little Spencer Mountain

Little Spencer Mountain is on Map 49 E3 in the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer

Hiking Distance: 2 miles to the summit.

To get to Little Spencer Mountain, travel to Greenville; take the Lily Bay Road up the East side of Moosehead all the way to Kokadjo. About 19 miles. Stop at the small store in Kokadjo (Not a requirement but is always a fun place to stop). From Kokadjo, take the Greenville Road. This road turns to gravel a short ways past the store in Kokadjo and bears left just after turning to gravel. In 1.2 miles turn left again onto Spencer Pond RD, a well traveled gravel road. Go about 7.2 miles and take a right. There should be signs on the corner for Spencer Pond Camps. Very shortly after turning you get great views of Little Spencer. Go on this road just over 2 miles to the trailhead, keeping left when there's a choice and remember that Little Spencer is on your right when you reach the trailhead. Someone had been cutting back the sides of the road so the trailhead is a few feet off the road, however there is an easily visible trailhead sign on your right. Park well off the road out of the way of the logging trucks that zip through there.

This is a great hike with fantastic views all the way to the top, although the top has grown up quite a bit. There aren't panoramic views from up there any longer. However there is one view a few yards to the east, of Mt Katahdin and Big Spencer that shouldn't be missed. And the views you see on the way up are equal to any I've seen anywhere so far. This is a strenuous hike with lots of walking on the edges. People who have some fear of heights be aware. The climb requires using the rope for assistance when pulling yourself up through the three sided chimney, unless you’re a rock climber. This has been my favorite hike so far.
